CMHC

OCD, Trauma, Anxiety, Sexual issues, Grief

I don't believe the goal of therapy is to change you, as change is your choice, but it is to grow compassion, awareness, empathy, understanding, respect, and acceptance toward yourself and others which can allow change to happen. I will work with you to help create a deeper understanding of your own specific thoughts, feelings, emotions, and experiences and how these may be impacting your behavior, relationships, and overall outlook on life. You will explore and learn how to be your authentic self and set yourself free from the burdens that have held you back from engaging in the world in a way that brings you happiness. I hold values of honesty, authenticity, and genuine curiosity very highly in my relationships with my clients. This means that I share honest perspectives, challenge you to be meet your potential, and am invested in you as a person. While therapy is a professional relationship, I strive to connect with all my clients on a personal level and bring my own personality into the room. I believe that if you are open minded, committed to your growth, and are curious about yourself, we will work great together and will be able to uncover the greatness that rests within you.

KNOW YOUR THERAPIST

WHAT DID YOU GET YOUR DEGREE(S) IN AND WHERE FROM?

University of Wyoming; MS in Counseling, MS in Accounting, BS in Accounting

SUMMARY OF PROFESSIONAL HISTORY

I am currently a Therapist at Utah State University's Counseling and Preventative Services in conjunction with my work at Family Counseling Solutions. Prior to these roles, I completed my internship at the University of Wyoming Counseling Center and a Practicum at Wellspring Counseling Center. I was an accountant before my career switch, earning a master's in accounting and getting my CPA. While this experience is unrelated to the work I do now, it has helped me connect and help those who have career uncertainty and are not aligning their values to their behavior. I believe it has also helped me know that it is never too late to make major changes in your life. In addition to my professional experiences, my volunteer work with SAFE men (a sexual violence advocacy group), Laramie Reproductive Health, and Court Appointed Special Advocates have all helped me develop my passion for serving others and bettering our community.

WHAT MADE YOU WANT TO BECOME A THERAPIST?

When I grew up, I went to family therapy for a long time and felt very unheard, uncared for, and often invalidated. I never expected that one day I would become a therapist. However, I always wanted a career where I could connect with others and help them in a more personal and meaningful way. I eventually went back to therapy as an adult and was able to recognize how a therapist could be such an impactful tool for growth and healing. I then realized that I wanted to be the therapist I did not have growing up and be in a position where I could serve those who are trying to make changes in their life. I love what I do and am continually grateful for each client for giving me the opportunity to help them understand and connect to to the most meaningful and vulnerable parts of themselves.

WHAT HAS SHAPED YOUR THERAPEUTIC APPROACH?

I have shaped my therapeutic approach based on what I have seen most my clients connect with but will adjust this slightly with every client based on their individual needs. Internal Family Systems is the theory I use to understand the struggles my clients are dealing with and it seems to really help people who have difficulty connecting to or understanding themselves on an emotional level.

WHAT KIND OF HOMEWORK OR ASSIGNMENTS DO YOU GIVE CLIENTS?

I do give homework, typically working on noticing parts of you that we are focusing on and implementing the changes we are working towards. Occasionally, I will give journaling homework or experiential homework depending on your needs.

HOW SHOULD I PREPARE FOR MY FIRST SESSION WITH YOU?

Be prepared to reflect on the parts of you that may need attention and be willing to give them what they need. Reflect on your values and what changes in your life are necessary to align with those values.
